The LIAA was founded in 1985 to honour the world's most creatively driven projects, where the winners are selected based on creative excellence rather than marketing effectiveness. There are no gold, silver and bronze medals, only winners and finalists. There can be only one winner per category and this year four categories had no winners.
O&M Rightford (Gauteng) won the Grand Prize in the Interactive Media category for a website banner produced on behalf of People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA). The banner invites the user's interaction by placing them in the position of the abuser, through the use of the "hand" icon. Every time the "hand" approaches an animated female character on screen, she tries to escape or huddles trembling in the corner. This is followed by the line "Domestic abuse can be avoided" and the POWA hotline number.

The Jupiter Drawing Room, Johannesburg, won in the Print: Banking/Financial/Insurance category, for the 'Eiffel Tower' ad done for Nedbank corporate, and in the Radio: Copywriting category, for the 'Saffron' ad, also done for Nedbank. The Jupiter Drawing Room's Cape Town branch were winners, too, in the Packaging Design: Automotive Products category, for work they did for Gabriel Shock Absorbers.
