ICASA approves Red Bull Music Academy broadcast license

Spectrum - the Association of Arts Broadcasting - has been granted a special events license to cover the Red Bull Music Academy in Cape Town. Spectrum will broadcast in Cape Town on 91.3 FM from November the 6th through to 5th of December 2003.

The essence of Spectrum's broadcast style would be a new and fresh approach with less trivial talk and more informed content. The aim is to cover a music event; therefore the music will do the talking. Spectrum will aim to include interviews with the featured artists and industry representatives. In terms of the events that are educational or informative the station will attempt to convey as much of the relevant information as possible. It will also engage the event organisers and target community to ensure that the programme style is appropriate to the occasion and the needs of the audience.

The Red Bull Music Academy 2003 has selected Cape Town as the destination of this year's event. The event will open its doors to 60 participants selected from 38 countries. The international guests will be representing a global mix of cultures and music styles.

The Academy is to run in two, 2-week terms, with 30 participants per term.

Term 1: November 2-14
Term 2: November 23-5 December

The goal of the Red Bull Music Academy is to set up a space through which the driving forces behind the world's most vibrant music subcultures are invited to share their experiences, reflect their approaches and pass on valuable information to the new generation of DJ's and producers.

Over the last few years some of the biggest names in the contemporary music scene have given up their valuable time and flown across the globe to be part of this unique educational process. These include J-Rocc; Babu; Christian Vogel; Claude Young; John Acquaviva: Derrick Carter: Grandwizard Theodore and King Brit were some of the DJ/producers who have taken part in past academies.

The Red Bull Music Academy aims to cover all aspects of the industry from DJing; producing; equipment; music labels; music law; distribution; networking - through to the implementation and marketing of events. The likes of Storm; Nu-Mark; Mixologists; Jay Majic and Cream all have paid a visit to the Academy to lend their expertise and experience to the students.

For any aspiring DJ and or producer, the Red Bull Music Academy is the only event of its kind worldwide. It offers the participants the opportunity to be part of music culture that was conceived to supply a platform through which they are able to interact with like-minded people from around the world. The goal of the Academy is for the participants to learn, share and experience all aspects of the music world.

Through the series of lectures and workshops the end result is that students from around the world will return to their country of origin and share the experience and knowledge gained through the Academy with others in their local music industry.

The Spectrum 91.3FM broadcast intends to achieve three main objectives:

· To universalise the experience of the Red Bull Music Academy

The academy by necessity is a closed shop. Thousands of DJ's and producers from around the world apply but only 60 are lucky enough to be accepted. This year will be slightly different as Spectrum will broadcast the proceedings of the academy through FM and the web, for the first time people from around the world will be able to participate in this unique institution.

· To showcase the participants

In the past, many of the biggest names in the music world have lent their skills and experience to the Academy as lecturers. Spectrum allows a global audience to share that wisdom. Besides the lecturers, there are also the students drawn from countries around the world. The Academy is not just any "DJ School". The students have already demonstrated enormous talent to be accepted to the Academy. We expect that the material they bring to the station just might upstage a lecturer or two.

· To shine a light on the talent of the host nation

Spectrum will provide an outlet for the South African DJ's and producers tirelessly producing the unique diversity of new music in this country. Spectrum will provide a global platform for as many South Africans as can be squeezed in.

The station is also an incredible opportunity for those wanting to participate in radio. The station is seeking people to fill a number of positions as producers, presenters and live correspondents.

Through the implementation of the radio service, Spectrum will be adding another dimension to the project.
