Key purpose of the role

The incumbent is required to compile traffic reports inline with the various stations on air style. He or she is required to stick within the durations as prescribed by the stations, and deliver flawless, up to date reports, within the deadline. The traffic Compiler and Anchor should also flag incidents that have news value and be in constant communication with producers and the News Desk.

Key outputs/accountability

• Compile (for talk and music stations) useful information for commuters on traffic patterns ensuring that the major routes are adequately covered
• Traffic reports must also include unusual traffic movements, major accidents, traffic delays or roadworks that may impact audience’s routes.
• Provide alternatives routes to assist consumers of our products.
• Present on-air high-quality traffic bulletins – containing the latest traffic developments
• The traffic bulletins should be accurate, concise and relevant to our audiences
• Update the EWN Traffic social media pages regularly.
• Provide support to the desk on traffic matters
• Inform and assist the desk on major developments that need to be included in news bulletins.
• Write articles to alert readers about road closures as a result of events.
• Able to banter and contribute to the overall quality of the shows he or she services.

 Educational qualifications

• Relevant tertiary qualification

 Required knowledge and experience

• Understanding of traffic patterns
• Ability to interpret traffic maps to source information
• Excellent contact base within city and provincial traffic and emergency departments to follow up on reports.
• Excellent use of technology to be able to accurately indicate delays and high traffic volumes so that users are able to time their travel.

Required skills

• Must be able to read and write traffic reports from scratch
• A strong, clear voice
• Must have knowledge of traffic patterns
• Ability to interpret traffic maps
• Ability to use available tools to source traffic information
• Computer literate
