ASA clarifies ad alert confusion

An April 2006 Ad Alert arose out of a ruling against the claim "SA's largest free motoring publication" on SA Auto Mart magazine, which publisher Alli Cat could not prove. The Ad Alert resulted from a failure to co-operate with the ruling and print an "apology" statement, and advises Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa members not to accept Alli Cat's advertising.

The Ad Alert is now being distributed to car dealers, creating an impression that they should not place advertising with SA Auto Mart.

The ASA has clarified, in a statement issued to the press, as follows:

"It is true that Alli Cat Publishing has failed to co-operate with the ASA.

As a result, ASA members may not accept advertising from this company.
The ASA does not have the authority to request people not to place advertising with Alli Cat.

Dealers receiving the ASA Ad Alert may therefore disregard it."
