Agencies join forces to help underprivileged

The Lobedu Leo Burnett Communications Group has been honing its innovative skills once again - this time the team has initiated a social responsibility project intent on raising much-needed funds to build classrooms for Vulingqondo pre-primary school in Orange Farm.

Towards the middle of June, Melissa Read, Starcom's Media Buying Director started this project by approaching various media owners to donate media inventory to this worthy cause. In the first two days she had secured space to the value of R500 000 and by the end of the month media donations exceeded R1.5 million.

With the assistance of all the participating agencies, the Group plans to auction the media space to clients and the proceeds will be used to build pre-primary and primary school classrooms as well as an aftercare centre facility. Melissa Read comments: "If we reach our target we will be in a position to go beyond building the well needed classrooms and build cloakrooms and fence the school property as well".

To date, media space has been donated by: Yfm, Y Mag, City Press, Rapport, SABC TV, Algoa Radio, Men's Health, SABC Radio, Citizen, CineMARK, Alive Advertising, Time Magazine, TopCar, Golfer's World, I/Net, Proshop, Streetpole Advertising and etv.

Anyone interested in supporting this worthy cause by participating in the auction should contact Melissa Read on Tel: 27 11 235 4158. The auction date is scheduled for 16 September 2004.
