Adcorp's Loane Sharp says that 10,2-million South Africans - equivalent to one-in-five - received grants or one form or another. There are a total of 14,9-million grants being paid amounting to 1,5 grants per person and giving beneficiaries an average income of R9 539 annually.
Sharp says that a total of 43,3% of unemployed people are willing to accept a job if they are offered one when they are living off their own savings whereas just 11,1% of people will accept a job if they are being paid social welfare grants.
