SA blog wins Best African Blog at 2009 Bloggies

South African weblog Glad to be a Girl has won the Best African Blog award at the 2009 Weblog Awards held at the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas, US, it was announced yesterday, Monday, 16 March, 2009. The annual non-profit ceremony awards bloggers worldwide.

Glad to be a Girl is a personal blog written by phillygirl on her day-to-day experiences and opinions. She also tweets as @philly_girl.

Commented phillygirl on her win: "I am amazed by the win! I mean sure, we all enter these things with the best of intentions. Generally, I do it because I hope to be one of the finalist (like in the 2008 Bloggies) because those lists stay up there with a link to your blog indefinitely. So the international (and even local!) exposure is what it's all about to me.

"That said, winning is fantastic and I'm enjoying the increased traffic and hoping to snag a few new regular readers from it, even though I'm well aware that my blog won't appeal to everyone.

"Also, I hope everyone will remember we have our own local brand of Blog Awards on the go currently too," she added.

Other competitors

Other competitors in the Best African Blog category included West Africa Wins Always, Being Brazen, Appfrica and Scarlett Lion.

The Bloggies is the longest-running blog awards running on the web. All nominations, finalists and votes are decided by the general public.

The SXSW Interactive Festival (www.sxsw.com) is a five-day event featuring panel content and parties aiming to attract digital creatives and technology entrepreneurs. SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive events attract approximately 11 000 registrants to Austin every March. The
