Hanly quits 24.com to go farming

Russell Hanly today, Tuesday, 21 October 2008, stepped down as CEO of 24.com after eight years with Media24. Handing over the reins to JP Farinha and commenting on his future plans, Hanly said, “I'm looking forward to getting back to my farming roots; something that I've been planning to do for a while."

Continued Hanly, “The change in pace and lifestyle will be quite a contrast from the fast-moving realities of online publishing, however, I don't expect to completely lose touch with the online space given the extensive network I've built up over the years.”

Under Hanly's leadership, Media24 was established as South Africa's leading digital publisher, including 24.com, the country's most visited network of websites.

Previously CTO and COO of 24.com, ‘youthful veteran of South Africa's Internet space' Farinha joined 24.com in April 2006. He has been GM of MWeb Studios and MD of iafrica.com, as well as working with various online ventures, including Metropolis Transactive and US-based VerticalNet. He is a founding member of the Online Publishers Association (OPA) and has served on its executive committee since the organisation's inception.

“Russell has built a strong online business well positioned for future growth in the online space, and I'm keen to further entrench 24.com as South Africa's leading Internet brand,” said Farinha. “I'm proud to work with a vibrant team of talented IT professionals, editors and publishing specialists who are the reason for 24.com's leadership position and the foundation for even better things to come.”

For the sake of business continuity and a comprehensive handover, Hanly will remain at 24.com until the end of November.
