    Telling stories with Hochschild

Following the success of last year's Narrative Journalism Conference, this year's event, co-hosted by the Nieman Society of Southern Africa and Wits University's School of Journalism, will take place on 27 - 28 March 2006, with award-winning author Adam Hochschild as key speaker under the theme 'Telling Africa's Stories'.

Hochschild's first book "Half the way home: a memoir of father and son" was published in 1986. It was followed by "The Mirror at midnight: A South African Journey" (1990) and "The Unquiet ghost: Russians remember Stalin" (1994). Hochschild's books have been translated into five languages and have won prizes from the Overseas Press Club of America, the World Affairs Council, the Eugene V. Debs Foundation, and the Society of American Travel Writers.

Hochschild will present a plenary session and two workshops during the March Narrative Journalism Conference. They are:
Plenary: King Leopald's Ghost: The craft of narrative to tell Africa's story
Workshop: The architecture of narrative writing. Reporters and editors attending this workshop will be required to submit a sample of their work in electronic form. These will be discussed during the workshop.
Workshop: The craft of writing good profiles using narrative.

Workshop participation is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. All workshop participants are required to submit published or unpublished work for discussion.

Conference fees are R1 140 (including VAT) with discounted fees of R570 (including VAT) for post-graduate journalism students. The conference will be limited to 100 participants. Bookings close on 17 March 2006.
