    NASA bursary in media management available

    In support of developing skills within the South African print media industry, the Newspaper Association of South Africa (NASA) has established an annual NASA President's Bursary for a post graduate diploma in media management (PDMM) at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. Applications close 15 November 2006.

    The PDMM, presented by the Sol Plaatje Media Leadership Institute at Rhodes, will equip a student to succeed in all areas of managing the business operations of a print media enterprise. The full-time one-year course will develop the student's skills in: leadership; media economics and financial planning; markets and audiences; human resources management; programming; advertising; circulation and distribution; and media law and policy.

    Applicants who are interested in applying for the bursary must have:

    • an undergraduate degree or diploma in journalism or media studies from a recognised technical college;
    • at least three year's experience in the print media (newspapers or magazines) industry;
    • must be resident within the Republic of South African.

    The course will commence on 14 February 2007 and will end on 30 November 2007. The course caters primarily for individuals who do not have much or any management experience, but aspire to become managers in the near future. For more information, go to http://journ.ru.ac.za/spi/.

    The Bursary, to the value of R21 700.00 will only cover the student's tuition fee and books. The successful candidate will be responsible for the residence fees and other sundry expenses.

    A selection committee will evaluate all applications. The successful candidate will be contacted before 8 December and will be required to enter into a contract. No correspondence will be entered into with unsuccessful candidates. Applicants who do not hear from the committee by 15 December must assume that their application was unsuccessful.
