Main job purposes

To conduct checks, tests, and maintenance on all electrical and mechanical equipment and facilities. The mechanician/millwright should ensure that the company fully complies with its contractual obligations, ensuring equipment and facilities are fully functional. The mechanician/millwright is also responsible for keeping records of such maintenance and reporting any serious or malicious damage to electrical and mechanical equipment or facilities to the superior in a timely manner.

Employment specification

Education and experience (minimum requirements to perform the job):

• Minimum grade 12 certificate
• Qualified artisan: Mechanician or millwright
• At least eight years of related experience
• Valid unendorsed code 08 driver’s licence
• In-depth knowledge of processes and rules, together with the MIS electronic toll collection system
• Understanding of relevant procedures, such as environmental, health and safety compliance, good housekeeping practices, and procedure manuals
• Understanding of supervisory responsibilities/functions

Physical demands and work environment:

The daily physical demands include working on the route, inside, outside, and on top of buildings/ladders.

• The technician must drive a motor vehicle on public roads
• Regular overtime and standby duties are to be performed
• The work environment is typical of a highway and toll road setting, as well as office buildings
• Work is performed inside and outside buildings

Essential duties and responsibilities:

• Maintain toll plaza electrical and mechanical equipment
• Maintain all electrical reticulation systems at the plaza, including DBs, low voltage cabling, wiring, earthing protection installations, socket outlets and switches, power skirting, and geysers
• Maintain lighting installations, including area, plaza, canopy and booth lighting, fog lights, and flashing beacons
• General handyman maintenance, including electrical, mechanical, building, plumbing, and painting
• Conduct daily and monthly inspections and preventative maintenance of all electrical, mechanical, access control, CCTV equipment, and buildings at the plaza
• Fault finding
• Dismantle equipment for repair or transportation and reassemble when appropriate
• Analyse drawings
• Align and calibrate machinery and equipment parts as required for efficient and safe operation
• Repair all malfunctioning equipment and buildings as per the maintenance manual
• Report all incidents in the prescribed manner
• Recordkeeping of all inspections
• Ensure tools are kept in good and clean working order
• Ensure health, safety, and security policies and procedures are followed at all times
• Ensure all equipment is in good working order to ensure maximum uptime
• Supervise subcontractor work at plazas, ensuring the scope of work is correct, quality is acceptable, and compliance with health and safety legislation
• Refuse subcontractor access in cases of substandard work or non-compliance
• Assess asset utilisation and consequent capex requirements
• Manage and deliver on succession plans
• Promote continuous improvement and best practices through regular communication and team meetings
