New law introduces media censorship

Issa Sikiti da Silva[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Journalists, editors and publishers ‘not recognised' by the South African press ombudsman and ‘not adhering to its code of conduct' face the prospect of being jailed for five years or a fine, or both, if they fail to submit their copies or material prior to publication or broadcast, exhibition or distribution to the Films and Publications Board (FPB) for approval. This is according to the newly-signed Films and Publications Amendment Act 3 of 2009.

'Broke' SABC closes five foreign news bureaux

Issa Sikiti da Silva[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Things will never be the same again at the SABC. Ruined by years of, among others, financial mismanagement, excessive overspending, internal power struggles, political interference, inadequate state funding and lately a litany of court battles, the once-profitable public broadcaster - now a financial skeleton - has embarked on a severe cost-cutting exercise. Its latest decision includes the closing of five foreign news bureaux and the scaling down of news operations in several countries.

Amod Munga commented on MTN launches SA Radio Awards

Seriously. How many more award shows do we need? And what's the relevance? I mean, if a Cape Town station wins Best Breakfast Show, people from Jozi are hardly likely to move house to listen to the show. In fact, the only benefit of the awards will be for the stations themselves - who will no doubt spin the awards into a reason for advertisers (who aren't that savvy) to do business with them. Awards are no reason to do business with anyone. Results are. Maybe more people from Cape Town switch to that Breakfast Show? You may say "yes"...but that's only if you believe in the listener-fiction.

DoC slammed for ‘rushing' broadcasting legislation

Issa Sikiti da Silva[Issa Sikiti da Silva] The Department of Communications (DoC), led by former army general Siphiwe Nyanda, has come under fire from media experts and civil society groups for attempting to ‘push' the new broadcasting legislation into law without proper consultation and in-depth research, a move they say risks to create more problems in the future.

7th Son shares their Ontology
[Ruth Cooper] 7th Son, for me, has always been a live band, which is the only way I have experienced them in the past. So it took me a little while to warm to the band's second album, Ontology. Call me superficial, but without all the cute interactions of the six members and their often toplessness in live shows, the music on its own seemed to be lacking a certain something.

Are 2010 host cities doing enough?
[Dr Nikolaus Eberl] At the recent Green Point Stadium Lecture Series on destination branding for the host city of Cape Town, a debate erupted over what exactly should be Cape Town's tag line for 2010 visitors and whether the recent branding of the city as “Africa's Party Capital” was “a disaster”, as one Cape Town representative put it.

Enver Buys commented on Media missed real scoop about Semenya

While the mainstream failed to celebrate the victory of Caster Semenya, they online community loved everything about Caster's victory. So much that the Facebook group, In support of Caster Semenya and African women set a new world record oby registering 46 000 members in one week.

Only The Star and SAfm reported this record breaking achievement, why did the mainstream media fail to report this important social networking trend?

Caster victory is very bit a part of every African women on the continent. On the 21 August 2009, Mr. Thabiso Teffo founder of the Facebook group In Support of Caster Semenya and African Women, had the following to say, “African Women across the world always find themselves being questioned about their unusual bodily features, this dates back to the days of Saartjie Baartman, she was exhibited around Britain for her highly unusual bodily features.

On the 27 August Thabiso wrote the following, "We'll honor our Icons like Sartjie Bartman, Lillian Ngoyi, Sir Leaf- Johnson in Liberia, and every other women has worked her self to sleep."

We the young leaders pledge ourselves, to work with everyone across all social, ethnic, and gender to highlight the plight of the Women in Sudan who went to court as a result of wearing a trouser. We shall stand beside the Sudanese during her court battle, for she is still 100% Women with her jeans.

Mission of Facebook Group, In Support of Caster Semenya and African Women.

August in South Africa, the nation celebrates the achievement of Women, in fighting against all forms of discrimination, women across the world , always found themselves having to suffer a result of the gender stereotypes , we therefore call upon all South African and the world to celebrate the women of the world, in breaking barriers gender insensitivity. Another prize comment from the SABC, courtesy of its spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, regarding the programming error: "Thank you very much to the people watching the SABC. When things go wrong they're quick to complain, but they don't congratulate us when things go right."

So you're telling us that every time you people actually do your jobs properly and don't screw up some programme / schedule / whatever, that we should call to say, "Well done for not f**king up today!" ?! :P

Oh, and for all those who are keen to catch the cut scene (hopefully in the right sequence this time), SABC 3 will be rebroadcasting all Monday night's episodes this Sunday, 6 September, from 2 - 4.30pm.

Survivor China: the Great Wall of SABC ruin
[Shan Radcliffe] It was all hands-on-deck for the three-hour Survivor finale last night, as fans across South Africa tuned in to watch the final plays and last minute wheeling and dealing from the contestants to see who would be crowned the winner of Survivor China. It's the moment we've all been waiting for. The reason we've spent the last few months glued to our screens, watching the contestants battle the elements and each other, vying for our favourites as they scheme, back-stab and connive their way through to make it to the final four.

[Sindy Peters] District 9, the sci-fi flick that's been making quite the splash in the US was unleashed last Friday, 28 August 2009 for the South African market to see what all the fuss is about. It's a brilliant movie from start to end and definitely worth all the hype. Don't go to see it just because it's a South African movie and you're fulfilling your patriotic duty; go to see it because it's an amazingly written and directed piece of work.
