Golden Boys of Swimming and their Dilemma

Should the Olympic swimming team be disciplined over something as dumb as swimming gear?

I read an article online about the awesome foursome (our men's relay swimming team) facing a possible disciplinary hearing when they return after the Olympics. Two reasons have been stated. One: They did not swim in Speedo gear (who happens to be the official sponsor) and they did not compete in certain events as decided by Swimming SA.

Now the what interests me here is the Speedo issue. Like many South Africans I was thrilled at news that we won gold. Let's face it - it was and still is exciting news for us. Now, to me it seems as if Speedo (and not particularly Swimming SA) is pissed off about the team not wearing the prescribed gear. I believe that they must have seen that as a 'golden' opportunity to promote themselves as supporters of a winning team.

Personally, it makes no sense for them to be disciplined because of this. The team says that the swimming gear they used was better suited for them to be able to win the race.

The Olympics is just one big way for advertisers to promote their goods. Shouldn't it be about the sport? What will this do to the morale of that particular group of swimmers to first bring glory to their country and then be kicked in the teeth?
