Staff Nurse

Job summary:

The staff nurse provides high-quality, compassionate nursing care to patients across various age groups and healthcare needs. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, ensuring adherence to clinical guidelines and best practices.

Key responsibilities:

Patient care:
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, monitoring for effectiveness and adverse reactions.
  • Perform and assist with diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Provide education and support to patients and families regarding health conditions, treatments, and preventive measures.
Clinical skills:
  • Monitor and record patient vital signs and symptoms.
  • Insert and manage intravenous lines, catheters, and other medical devices.
  • Execute emergency procedures and provide basic life support when needed.
  • Document patient information accurately and in a timely manner in electronic health records (EHR).
Collaboration and communication:
  • Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to address concerns and provide updates.
  • Participate in patient care conferences and interdisciplinary meetings as required.
Quality and safety:
  • Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a clean and safe environment for patients.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education to enhance skills and knowledge.
Administrative duties:
  • Manage and coordinate patient care activities, including scheduling and documentation.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records.
  • Assist with the ordering and inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Nursing degree from an accredited institution (associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing).
  • Licensure: Valid registered nurse (RN) licence in South Africa.
  • Experience: Ten years of nursing experience preferred.
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and other specialised certifications may be required based on the unit or facility.
Skills:
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficient in using electronic health records and other healthcare technologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Compassionate and patient-centred approach to care.
Physical requirements:
  • Ability to lift, move, and support patients as needed.
  • Capable of standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination for performing nursing tasks and procedures.
Work environment:
  • Typically works in a hospital, clinic, or healthcare facility setting.
  • May require shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the facility's needs.
