The sales and merchandising representative is responsible for promoting, selling, and ensuring the proper merchandising of the company’s products and plays a crucial role in promoting and representing a brand's products and values.

This role involves visiting retail customers, maintaining relationships, understanding consumer needs, and optimising product displays to increase sales.

The representative works closely with the sales team, marketing department, and retail partners to execute effective sales strategies and merchandising plans.

Key responsibilities

Drive shopper consideration:
  • Have thorough product and pricing knowledge of the brand’s basket.
  • Understand the brand's product proposition and unique selling points versus key competitors.
  • Be knowledgeable of BTL campaigns during key categories.
  • Increase shopper product consideration by attracting and engaging shoppers.
  • Close the sale with the shopper.
Understand and reach key business goals:
  • Store growth targets.
  • Market share gain (store comparisons).
  • Drive return on investment.
Relationship management: provide insights and influence at the store level:
  • Provide category insights and competitor activity at the store level through continuous evaluation of product, price, promotion, placement, pack, and proposition.
  • Build relationships with store managers using insights and tangible opportunities favourable to the brand.
Minimum requirements:
  • University degree/diploma in business, marketing, or related field (preferred).
  • Good command of English; and other South African languages is an advantage.
  • Own smartphone required.
  • Tech/app savvy.
  • Ability to drive between store locations.
  • Ability to work weekends and public holidays.
Knowledge:
  • Proven working experience as a shopper advisor or promoter for FMCG, skincare brand preferred.
  • Product selling stories, understanding shoppers’/consumers’ profiles, and the key skin needs.
  • Literate in using IT solutions to perform the job, e.g., working with mobile applications (TRAX, WTS).
  • Basic knowledge of the above but will be further trained on the work scope during the day and required priorities.
Skills:
  • Selling tech and/or telecoms category.
  • Good communication, listening, questioning, and handling objections.
  • Excellent negotiation and persuasion abilities.
  • Ability to analyse market trends.
  • Self-motivated with strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Up to date with people/situational awareness.
  • Priority setting, planning, and action-oriented.
