AFDA is inviting applications for the position of a research studies lecturer.

AFDA is looking for a committed and dedicated lecturer with industry experience to lecture and provide support to first, second, and third-year undergraduate students. The position requires someone with drive and initiative who is able to motivate students and help them engage with the various theories presented by research studies. The candidate needs to demonstrate a willingness to embrace AFDA’s unique pedagogy, which is the basis of interdisciplinary teaching at AFDA. There is a strong emphasis on cultural relevance within the teaching and the need to help students identify and develop a distinctive African voice in their productions. In this way, we hope to contribute to nation-building and build the foundations for a sustainable local entertainment industry.

Roles and responsibilities

A research studies supervisor is expected to:
  • Acquire and maintain an up-to-date understanding of the BA programme by completing the AFDA onboarding process and attending all staff training sessions.
  • Lecture first, second, and third-year BA motion picture medium and BA live performance degree students on research studies, including the EVAM pedagogy of narrative, performance, medium, aesthetics, and control.
  • Administer group feedback sessions: concept pitches, final pre-production presentations, and final reviews.
  • Assess written and practical work across the undergraduate school.
  • Manage the online learning and communications platform - my.afda - for research studies.
  • Conduct student consultations and reflective meetings.
  • Prepare content and lesson plans for each term.
  • Provide administrative support to the programme coordinator.
  • Create and manage attendance registers, class management, and tutorial administration.
  • Source external examiners and ad hoc lecturers.
  • Plan timetables.
  • Schedule exams.
  • Research and develop/enhance the curriculum.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality enhancement practices.
  • Work with counterparts to ensure parity across all campuses on term outcomes and assessments.
  • Participate in all required marketing activities such as open days and consultations with prospective students where required.

Selection criteria
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree (honours).
  • Established work experience in tertiary education.
  • Industry knowledge of the film/television and/or performance industries.
