MACRA gears up for digital migration

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is gearing up for migration from analogue to digital broadcasting in line with International Telecommunications Union (ITU) international deadline of 17 June, 2015, according to a statment issued by the organisation.

“MACRA together with all stakeholders will be establishing a Digital Migration Working Group (DMWG) to spearhead the migrations process among others developing policy, technical and economic recommendations on the process of migration,” read the statement.

The group will comprise of ICT stakeholders with the mandate to produce a detailed roadmap indicating how the process will be managed without any disruptions to the current broadcasting sector using appropriate strategies as approved by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

“We need to keep track with these rapid technological developments by formulating policies and implementing strategic measures that will advance national government policies of higher economic growth, broadening participation and eradication of poverty,” says MACRA.

MACRA observes that while digital migration involves technological development and innovation, in essence, it can be understood as a social and economic process because it will also have unprecedented social and economic benefits.
