The festival launched the same year South Africa's solidified it's international filmmaking reputation with Gavin Hood's gritty drama Tsotsi. Since then, South Africa has gone on to shine at Filminute with Bauke Brouwer's award-winning 2010 one-minute film Gumboots and again with Brouwer's epic 2011 film Fallen. Filminute was also honoured to have Canadian-based South African director Neill Blomkamp on the 2010 jury.
"Through our connections in the South African world of commercial advertising, we've long been aware of the great work coming out of the region. Through our collaboration with bizcommunity.com it's been fantastic to see how an enterprise like this promotes the film industry in both South Africa and the continent and how that promotion results directly in increased African submissions to Filminute. No doubt South African and African films will continue to play an increasingly important role at Filminute going forward."
