Free State kicks off winter school to help matrics

In a bid to improve the 2012 Grade 12 National Senior Certificate results, the Free State Department of Education is conducting winter school classes at about 43 centres across the province.

About 13 317 matriculants, drawn from 107 township and rural schools, are set to benefit from the initiative, where they will be studying English First Additional Language, Mathematics, Mathematics Literacy, Life Sciences, Physical Science, Accounting, Economics and Geography.

The initiative follows a commitment made by provincial MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe, during the department's 2012/13 budget speech, to improve the provincial matric results from 75.7% to 80% this year.

Makgoe said in 2011, it was observed that matrics did not perform well in these subjects. He appealed to learners to use this opportunity to attend winter classes.

The winter classes, which started on Monday, will be conducted until 13 July 2012.

Makgoe also urged parents to offer the necessary support to learners as they prepare for their final exanimations, which start on 22 October until 30 November 2012.

"Arrangements for accommodation, transport and catering have been made for learners who are staying far from the centres," he said.

To strengthen and complement the Winter School Programme, the department said educators were being concurrently trained on Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement. The training, which also commenced on Monday, will be conducted until 29 June 2012.
