Mathew Gold's No Ordinary Guy hits digital space

No Ordinary Guy - the first release off rising local star Mathew Gold's new album, "The Rush", has finally hit digital space. The hip hop-inspired electronic track features multi-award-winning SA hip hop artist AKA and is produced by SAMA-nominated Ben Peters from GoodLuck. The track draws influence from some of the greatest electronic hip hop artists and producers (such as Kanye West and Frank Ocean), but has a completely fresh edge. No Ordinary Guy tells the story of an ordinary man on his quest for greatness.

Mathew Gold is best known for his smooth-and-dreamy vocals that propelled GoodLuck's Taking It Easy to being one of the top-10 tracks to come out of South Africa during 2011 and landing him a SAMA nomination for Record of The Year. GoodLuck enjoyed working with Gold so much that they decided to produce his first album.

"The Rush" is set to be released in the coming months and features productions by Crazy White Boy, Justin Denobrega, AKA, Mr Sakitumi, Pascal and Pierce, David Jones and GoodLuck. No Ordinary Guy was based on a freestyle recorded on Gold's phone at a party, where he knew instantly that AKA would be a great addition to take the track to the next level. Inspired by hip hop and electronic music in South Africa, Gold wanted to create a track that crossed over both platforms and intertwined the electronic pop sound of his album with hip hop and dance.

A mixture of genres and music styles

Each song on "The Rush" was carefully selected for inclusion on the album and fans will experience a mixture of genres and music styles, including a soul track in which Gold has recorded a deep electronic cover of Indie Irie's Brown Skin. Gold added: "The album has less of a 'sound' direction and more of a 'feel', capturing more of the emotion in the story than in the selection of sound - we wanted to create music that spans multiple genres and, because of that, also appeal to diverse audiences. We even went as far as using an out-of-tune upright piano for a drum-and-bass track, to ensure we got across the vintage sound in the track."

No Ordinary Guy, featuring AKA, is now available for download. Together, they've also produced a music video that brings the track to life and will be released at the end of March.
