Unemployment levels in 2010 high

A total of 395 000 people joined the ranks of the unemployed in 2010 according to figures released by Statistics South Africa. It says the total unemployment figure in 2010 of 13,1-million was slightly lower than 2009 when there were 13,5-million people without jobs.

It says that the effects of major retrenchments in South Africa in 2009 are still being felt, as the country has not recovered from the downturn two years ago.

It says that jobs in the formal sector shrank by 3,5% in 2010 compared with the previous year while employment in the informal sector actually grew by 1,4%. Of the people who were employed, the median salary was a paltry R2 900 a month.

It says about a third of employees - excluding those in the agricultural sector - were earning less than the median salary. Only about 25% of the working population are aged between 25 and 34.

StatsSA says that 41% of the people in this age group were unemployed while more than 50% of the people described as "not economically active" were aged between 15 and 24. The figures were published in the Labour Dynamics Report for 2010.
