Assmang invests R400-million to comply

Manganese producer Assmang has invested R400-million in its Cato Ridge plant in KwaZulu-Natal in an effort to reduce the high dust levels and ensure that it complies with environmental laws. However, during a site inspection by Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, the plant was closed for "routine maintenance".

Assmang is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals and Assore.

There have apparently been huge improvements to the Cato Ridge site's dust problems that were identified by environmental inspectors in 2007. Rico Euripidou, a researcher at the non-governmental organisation groundwork, says that while dust levels are better, there is still some concern over the levels of metal leaching from the waste disposal site.
