Eskom's TV messages lead to a significant reduction in demand

According to ESI-Africa, South Africa's national utility, Eskom, has expressed its thanks to customers who have responded to the Power Alert messages which are broadcast on TV each evening. Switching off non-essential appliances during peak hours, Eskom says, customers' efforts have made a significant difference to demand.
Eskom's TV messages lead to a significant reduction in demand

Audited estimates show a 326 MW reduction in residential demand during February 2012, equivalent to more than 3.6 million laptops being switched off across South Africa. March's 346 MW reduction is equal to nearly 580,000 fridges being switched off, and April's 421 MW reduction equals to more than 140,000 electrical geyser elements being switched off.

The biggest drop in residential demand for the year to date of 430 MW was achieved in June - which is more than the amount required to power a city like Mangaung, ESI-Africa reports.
