Slow, sweet road to brilliant brandy
Eugene Yiga 11 Jan 2016
For the first time, all the South African wines were initially judged in Paarl, resulting in a 27% increase in the number of entries. South Africa won 641 medals, including 32 Gold Best in Class and 13 Gold in the competition, a dramatic step up from the 367 it achieved a year ago.
Despite this strong performance from South Africa, it was Australia who topped the medal table this year, winning 695, including 35 Gold Best in Class and 20 Gold.
New Zealand won 305 medals, with its Kiwi Riesling scooping the London International Wine Fair Trophy for Single Vineyard White. Despite the success of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, it was Chile's Cono Sur 20 Barrels Limited Edition Sauvignon Blanc, which took home the IWSC Trophy for Sauvignon Blanc. In all, Chile saw its entries increase by 33% this year.
Constantia Glen's red and white flagship wines won a Gold Best in Class for the Bordeaux-style Constantia Glen Five 2008 and a Silver Best in Class for the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc.
