Packaging factory burns down

A packaging factory in Chloorkop, near Kempton Park, burnt down in the early hours of Friday morning, 5 June 2009, Ekhurhuleni Emergency Services said.

Damage "in millions" has been caused by the fire at the factory located on Derger and Vaseur Roads, said emergency services spokesman Roggers Mamaila.

He said a call about the fire was received shortly after midnight. By 6am, firefighters were still dousing out the flames.

Mamaila said the owner of the factory had been on the scene and assured them no one was in the building at the time of the fire.

"Doors and gates did appear to be locked."

"Once the fire is out, we would strip the building (to ensure no one was inside)," he said.

The cause of the fire was not yet known. Police and emergency services' fire inspectors were on scene investigating the incident.

"The main concern of emergency services (at the moment) is to ensure other buildings in the vicinity are protected," said Mamaila.
