Distell to market Bisquit cognac locally

Distell purchased the Bisquit cognac brand in 2009 from the Pernod Ricard Group and have so far released the VS Classique and VSOP Fine Champagne in South Africa. The XO Excellence will be released later. The Classique retails for around R265 and the VSOP at around R445.

Bisquit was selling in South Africa almost 150 years ago, according to archival records, which show it was being exported to Port Elizabeth as early as 1865.

Although a favourite of the French and other Europeans, as well as increasingly in the East, in recent times it has not been well known to most South Africans. That is set to change, according to Lee-Anne Lotz, brand manager: South Africa for Bisquit.

"The growth of South Africa's speciality potstill segment has generated great interest in connoisseur brandies, including cognacs. We are confident it will have strong local appeal judging by initial sales."
