'Speaking phone' keeps you connected

South African's first 'speaking phone' was recently launched amid much acclaim from the blind and visually impaired community. Loaded with specialised software, the Nokia 6600 mobile phone converts text to speech and literally 'talks' the user through the commands traditionally displayed on the screen.

The 'speaking phone', which is endorsed by the South Africa National Council for the Blind, allows users to customise volume, speed and pitch to suit their needs. They also have access to data services including text messaging, multi media messaging (MMS), cell to email functions and phone book entries. The software also allows the user to check the battery life and signal strength.

Incorporating the Symbian smart-phone operating system, which enables the use of MMS and Java applications and voice recorder applications, the Nokia 6600 can double as a dictaphone, while the hands-free speaker is ideal for conference calls. The phone features GPRS, voice dialing, voice commands and polyphonic ringtones. Additionally vibrating alerts, keypad tones, the ability to assign different ringtones to different callers, a raised dot on the keypad number five for easier navigation around the keypad, separate number and function keys and warning tones, as well as a large bright 65K colour display, are some of the standard features which make the Nokia 6600 user friendly for this market.

The Nokia 6600 is also available with the latest Loopset (LPS-3), for users with t-coil equipped hearing aids. The Loopset assists in eliminating interference caused when using a hearing aid and a mobile phone together. Vibrating alerts and lit-up display screens can notify a hard of hearing user to an incoming call or message.

Being aware of the physical challenges that many people face on a daily basis, Nokia have developed a wide variety of phones with advanced functionality to make the world of mobile technology accessible to all - ensuring everyone is kept connected.

The Nokia 6600, loaded with the 'text to speech' software, is available at Vodashops countrywide.
