No tariff increases from Sentech for 2004

Broadcast signal distributor, Sentech, has announced that it will not be increasing its tariffs to television and radio station operators this year. The last increase was in April 2003. Says, Riaan Emerich, Portfolio Manager for regulated signal distribution at Sentech: "Improved efficiency in our organisation means we have managed to keep costs down and we're passing these benefits on to our customers.

Sentech is the largest signal distributor for broadcasting in Africa and the only licensed "Common Carrier" in South Africa. Utilizing its vast infrastructure of 207 transmitting stations the organisation provides signal distribution for the SABC, Multichoice, etv, all commercial broadcasters, as well as a number of community broadcasters.

Says Emerich: "The service offering for regulated signal distribution is the provision of a rental service in the point-to-multi-point arena with the prime business being the transmission of signals for broadcasters. The service includes the establishment, renting, operation and maintenance of transmission channels, infrastructure and related activities."

Sentech also provides services internationally, for the delivery of Short Wave transmissions in the sub-Saharan region. Sentech has also established infrastructure on behalf of International Broadcasters in Brazil, Malaysia, Ghana, Guam, Lesotho and Botswana.

"The freeze on prices for this year is a gesture we feel will lessen the cost of broadcast communications in South Africa," says Emerich.

Sentech's latest addition to its broadband wireless product offering is the new wireless Internet service, called MyWireless offered in three packages, starting with MyWireless 128, which offers a shared 128Kbps connection, mainly for residential users, and two higher bandwidth offerings, namely MyWireless 256 and MyWireless 512, aimed at the small office home office (SOHO) and small to medium-sized enterprises.
