SABC told: "Say sorry to Mail & Guardian"

NEWSWATCH: Yup, they're back in the news, making it instead of reporting it... Who? The SABC, of course, which has been ordered to apologise to the Mail & Guardian for an interview the broadcaster conducted with businessman Robert Gumede, and which, to put it mildly, was less than accurate, and less than objective.

Mail & Guardian: Victory for M&G in Gumede complaint... Well, let's face it, it's probably better that they are making the news instead of reporting it, if the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of SA (BCCSA) judgment is anything to go by.

It's pretty damning - and as far as most commentators probably reckon, deservedly so - since it appears that the SABC broke just about every rule in the book.

'Awkward' Park, naturally, reckons it did nothing wrong, but you decide for yourself.

In making its ruling, the BCCSA didn't fine the SABC the maximum amount of R60 000. Instead, it ordered the broadcaster to broadcast a statement summarising the ruling on SABC3 during the 7pm news programme "on or before Wednesday March 30 2011" within the first 12 minutes of the broadcast. That sort of rubs their noses in it, and is probably just as well - the SABC could ill-afford any more costs, given its financial state.
