Presidency responds on 702 journo incident

The Presidency issued a statement yesterday, Wednesday, 17 March 2010, in which it has “noted with concern” reports of an incident between members of the SAPS Presidential Protection Unit (PPU) and an Eyewitness News reporter at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on Tuesday 16 March.

The Presidency says in its statement that it plays no direct role in the protection of the president, deputy president and other members of the executive and this is the responsibility of the SA Police Service (SAPS).

“The Presidency has, however, requested a report from the SAPS about the matter so that the facts can be established and recognises the “need for the media to be able to freely and effectively cover the president's activities. They should be able to exercise their constitutional rights unhindered”.

However, the Presidency statement also makes it clear that it also recognises that the PPU has a responsibility to guarantee the president's safety at all times, and to take all reasonable and necessary measures to ensure his security is not compromised.

The Presidency and the SAPS is discussing a proposal for a workshop between the PPU and media representatives in an effort to improve cooperation and understanding, particularly around coverage of the president and deputy president.

The Presidency says it is “essential that both the PPU and the media are able to do their work unhindered”.
