SAIIA to hold media training for mid-level journalists

The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) plans to conduct a training course for political and economic journalists in Johannesburg from December 1 to 12.

The training course will discuss issues of economics, trade, developmental challenges facing Africa, and the techniques needed to develop articles and analyses on these subjects. The course is open for mid-career journalists who cover political and economic development themes.

At the end of the course, participants will be expected to write articles for publication in the SAIIA journal, eAfrica. According to Ayesha Kajee, SAIIA seminar manager and researcher, the journal offers participants the chance to build a steady freelance income, based on typical fees of U.S.$0.20 to $0.25-per-word.

SAIIA is a private, non-profit organization at the University of Witwatersrand that produces international affairs analysis and research. The institute focuses on African issues and is currently involved in work for the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).

    Interested applicants should contact SAIIA before October 10. E-mail minnaara@saiia.wits.ac.za or fax +27 11 339 2154.

The SAIIA Web site is http://www.wits.ac.za/saiia/. Recent issues of eAfrica can be found at http://www.wits.ac.za/saiia/online.htm.
