National student film, TV festival launches

Sponsored by the SABC and Gauteng Film Commission, the Bafundi Film & TV Festival will allegedly be the first ever national student film and television festival in South Africa. A cohort of South Africa's finest student filmmakers will be descending on Wits University, 16 – 18 March 2008, to share their work, network with industry leaders and find out how to make a living from their art.

The theme of the 2008 festival is Building Professionals, brought out through seminars dealing with funding, commissioning and distribution. The delegates will also have opportunities to interrogate industry during round table sessions with commissioning editors, producers, directors and other key role players in the industry.

The festival includes screening sessions for each of the 12 participating film and television training institutions country wide. These screenings are open to the public and will provide a glimpse into what the new up and coming talent can offer (tickets at R 10 per session available at the theatre).

The Bafundi Film & TV Festival will create a platform for developing the quality and status of South African student film, as well as addressing current industry needs in training.

If you cannot make it to all the screenings, do not despair, the SABC will be flighting the student work in a 10-week series on national television.

The festival will be held at Wits Theatres.
