ASA appoints independent chairs

The Advertising Standards Authority has decided that in order to balance consumer rights and the rights of the advertising and marketing industry it is essential that their committees be chaired by independent persons with legal knowledge.

The Advertising Industry Tribunal, a committee that adjudicates advertising industry matters, will be chaired by Sara Gon, an attorney with a special interest in industrial relations and labour law. She also serves on the panel of the Arbitration and Mediation Service of South Africa. She was an acting judge in the Labour Court and an assessor in the Labour Appeal Court.

Brian Leveson will chair the Advertising Standards Committee, the body that adjudicates consumer and public complaints. He has practised as a human rights attorney for nine years, helped set up the Housing Advice Project of the Legal Aid Bureau and the Housing Rights Unit of Lawyers for Human Rights, as well as playing a big role in the establishment of the Housing Consumer Protection Trust.

Dr Danisa Baloyi, current chair of the Gauteng Tender Board, Tourism Business Council of South Africa and the Entrepreneurship and Small Business Association, has been appointed as the ASA's chairperson, while Ian Shepherd of Grey Worldwide will serve as Vice-Chair.
