SA makes D&AD Student shortlist

Of the seven South African student teams from Red & Yellow School and University of Pretoria which have made it into the D&AD Student Annual, three of those teams have been nominated for a Student Yellow Pencil, the organisers announced yesterday, Monday, 2 June 2008. The awards identify and promote the best emerging talent within design, advertising and communications each year.

This year, 125 student teams will attend the 30th Student Awards Ceremony in London on 26 June to find out who will get to walk away with a Student Yellow Pencil.

In total, 388 entries have been selected for the D&AD Student Annual, representing the best work of the year from students in creative courses across Europe, Asia, North America and South Africa. Over 3600 student teams entered work by responding to one of 30 real world briefs, which were written and judged by the world's foremost designers, advertising creatives and business professionals.

UK students reasserted themselves this year, as Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, Kingston University and Buckinghamshire New University won the most nominations. Design Factory International, Miami Ad School Hamburg and the Accademia di Comunicazione were among the top international schools to be recognised with nominations.

Al Young, D&AD Education chairman, said, “D&AD's approach to education is about connecting the industry with universities and colleges and supporting the next generation of talent. Just as the creative industries today operate with a global perspective, so does D&AD. So in our 30th year it is fitting, and I'm personally thrilled, to judge work from students all over the world.”

Nominated work will be showcased at D&AD New Blood (www.dandad.org/newblood08), 23 - 25 June, at Brompton Hall, Earls Court, London. New Blood, the D&AD's graduate talent show, is part of a week of education events that will see creative industry heavyweights begin the annual race for talent and aspiring creatives walk away with the skills and contacts they need to get a job in the creative industries.

All of the successful work will be published in the D&AD Student Annual, which will be published this September.
