Liesl Hermanus didn’t plan to fall pregnant at university. She struggled with the experience. After giving birth, she went through bouts of unexplained tearfulness. Hermanus couldn’t breastfeed, which provoked extreme anxiety. She felt like a failure. But today, Hermanus understands that as one in three people in South Africa to experience depression or anxiety, mental health issues are nothing to be ashamed of. Pregnant women in particular are at high risk, which is why she is working to create a safe space for them to speak up and be heard.

First Group's La Vita Health Spa at the Palace in Durban treated the three winners of the 2018 Hillcrest Aids Centre Gogo of the Year competition to a day of pampering. As the winners, the Gogos were given a brunch at the hotel's Pesto restaurant, which was followed by body treatments at the La Vita Spa, cosmetic gift hampers, and a travel set from Vaczone.
Global Citizen concluded its Mandela 100 campaign with a music festival at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. A number of local and international musicians, including Beyoncé and Jay Z, graced the stage as thousands of Global Citizens watched on.
When William Baartman was three years old, his family’s home was petrol bombed. It was 1976, and protesting students targeted Baartman’s father, an Afrikaans teacher. The fire took Baartman’s sister, Grace, and left him with burns across 75% of his body. He never finished school – the bullying was too much. Baartman was ashamed, and chose to stay home, hidden from the world. But today he walks with confidence. When Baartman visits children who have also suffered burns, he sees his younger self in them – strong survivors. But what the children see is their future....

The Tsogo Sun Silverstar Casino donated more than 189 staff hours and over R700,000 in various upliftment projects in celebration of Mandela Day. Its beneficiaries include the Bethany Trust House, which has several homes and centres under its care in Krugersdorp, as well as the Tower of Life, which shelters for men and women, and several others.
Sponsors, donors, and volunteers gave back this past Mandela Day and the days thereafter by doing a wide variety of activities at Afrika Tikkun's Centres of Excellence in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
