Strike not affecting Robben Island tours

Services to the Robben Island Museum are running as normal despite an indefinite strike by about 140 employees belonging to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union who work at the museum, according to IOL.

A spokesman for the museum said the tours to the island are all running on time and there is no disruption of any of the normal services.

Nehawu's provincial secretary Luthando Nogcinisa disputes this, saying that most of the boats are staffed by union members and can't be running normally.

The striking workers - the lowest-paid worker earns R78 000 a year, or about R6 000 a month - are demanding an increase of R2 500 across the board and additional time off over Christmas and New Year.

Meanwhile Robben Island staff insist that all services are running normally and tourists are travelling to the island on the schedule services.
