5 top Cape Town beach braai spots for the festive season

Briony Brookes, the communications and PR manager of Cape Town Tourism, has rounded up some of the best beach braai spots in and around Cape Town to enjoy with family and friends this festive season.

OudeKraal

Situated between Llandudno and Camps Bay, you’ll find a small piece of heaven for all beach and braai lovers. OudeKraal has secluded braai areas with amazing views of the ocean. There are also some really great spots for snorkelling with some friends. Just be sure to bring along all the things you need for the day as there aren’t any shops nearby.

Maiden’s Cove

This gorgeous oceanside spot lies between Clifton and Glen beaches and has great views of the sea and mountains. There’s a tidal pool for swimming and big boulders for sunbathing. There is also a grassy area to sit on and various braai places available to the public for free.

Buffels Bay, Cape Point

If the outdoors and the scenic views, I suggest you visit the most south-western corner of the African continent. Enjoy a braai at scenic Buffels Bay in the Cape Point Nature Reserve. There are also a number of hiking trails in the area for you to enjoy while the braai is sizzling.

Just a reminder to arrive early so you can avoid the daily traffic into the reserve. Locals are also encouraged to bring along their South African IDs in order to get into the reserve at a discounted rate.

Little Bay

Little Bay in Blouberg is a great spot for families. This area is ideal for kite flying, kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the view of Table Mountain is postcard perfect. The braai area is on a lawn for those who prefer not to have sand in their food, and best of all, entry is free!

Choose a wind-free day as this area can get rather blustery.

Kogel Bay

Braai sites, stunning views and the sound of the waves crashing into the rocks just metres from the sands. Coming along Clarence Drive from Gordon’s Bay towards Rooi Els, you can’t miss the main Kogel Bay beach and campsite about half-way between the two towns.

The Kogel Bay campsite is a beautiful braai spot in its own right, but you’ll have to pay camping fees to enter. A few 100 metres further towards Rooi Els, you’ll find the day camps and braai spots.
