RTMS is an industry-led self-regulation scheme that encourages consignees, consignors and transport operators engaged in the road logistics value chain to implement a vehicle management system that preserves road infrastructure, improves road safety and increases the productivity of the logistics value chain. The scheme also supports the Department of Transport's National Freight Logistics Strategy.

BPL is also a South African Safety and Quality Assessment (SQAS) accredited haulier and was the winner of the Chemical and Allied Industries Association Responsible Care Haulier of the Year award in 2012.

Specialised equipment

BPL road freight has collaborated with vehicle manufacturers to acquire specialised equipment that increases payloads, resulting in reduced trips and a contribution to a lower carbon footprint. The division's hi-tech management systems and cutting edge technology allow testing and simulation of various vehicles, enabling BPL to design and acquire the right vehicle combination for the right job. Vehicles are fitted with CCTV cameras to assist in correcting driver behaviour.

This, together with various other technologies, has resulted in a successful reduction of accidents and incidents. Future developments include sign on glass technology, which will also contribute in reducing BPL road freight's carbon footprint.
