Lizel Oberholzer attained a BProc and LLB (University of Potchefstroom), a LLM (Law of Contract) (University of Pretoria) and furthered her studies in Oil & Gas in the USA.
She is an admitted attorney and head of the Oil and Gas Department of Bowman Gilfillan. Oberholzer has over 10 years experience in the energy sector in Africa. Previously she was employed by the Petroleum Agency of South Africa and a leading oil company in SA as a legal advisor.
She focuses on the regulatory field of petroleum rights, the negotiating and drafting of oil & gas contracts in various jurisdictions in Africa. She was involved in the first exploration and production rights granted in South Africa and represented the industry in making representations to the DMR on the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Draft Amendment Bill.
Oberholzer is the co-author of the Mineral and Petroleum Law of South Africa (Juta) and Getting the Deal Through Oil Regulation (SA).
She is a member of the Cape Law Society, board member of the AIPN and the founding member of the Onshore Petroleum Association of South Africa.
Her department was awarded the Oil and Gas Deal Award for 2010 (Africa Investor). She recently presented at the spring conference of The American Bar Association in Washington on Shale Gas in SA.
