My name is Julian van Jaarsveld and I am a creative (photographer) residing in Douglasdale, Johannesburg. I have been working and living behind the lens now for close to a decade, having gained experience through a multitude of of different photographic genre's, as well as having spent a solid part of the past four years assisting and working with other creatives at the top of their fields on stills campaigns and various creative endeavors. A run through of some of the names of the creatives I've had the pleasure of working with, off the top of my head, consists of Ingrid Irsigler, Tim Hulme, Karin Orzol, Graeme Wyllie, Sean Laurenz, Jurie Potgieter, Alex Botha, Lesley Whitby as well as the one and only master of all things hair, Saadique Ryklief.
Along this journey of mine, I've also played my part as a studio manager in the past, too, when Flashback Studio's in Strydom Park was still run by Richard Cook, where I was assigned the responsibility of managing both the studio itself and client shoots (Lampost, Red Hot Ops and various other agencies & independent artists) as well as gaining knowledge in both Profoto and Broncolor photographic systems and various lighting setups through the whole process.
Regarding my career path, I really do love what I do, from both an artist and an assistant perspective, and am never shy to dig deep and learn from those I work with and to graft when and however I am needed to, often going above and beyond to assist all team members on production. I've never had any formal training, having been self and peer taught throughout, requiring me to learn through many instances of trial and error, which I suppose is just the way that things go in the industry, but I am still hungry as ever to make things happen through whatever means and mediums possible, be it in stills or cinematography productions.
Should there be any chance of me playing a role in any creative endeavor and to continue learning from the best as well as to contribute however and whenever I can, I would jump, and as high as possible at any and all opportunities to do so, and through doing so, hopefully upskill and become a supporting member to the creative industry as a whole, in South Africa.
