Gavin worked with the Liberty Life Group for 19 years. He headed the legal and marketing divisions of the group. In this role he oversaw the operations of Liberty's then 1,300 strong agency force as well as the broker and pensions marketing divisions. He served on the boards of many of the Liberty Group's local and offshore subsidiaries and on Liberty Group's Investment Strategy committee, Liberty Group Pension Fund and The Liberty Foundation. After two years as Managing Director of Liberty Collective Investments Ltd and overseeing their re-branding as Stanlib, Gavin acquired his own financial planning business.
In 2006 the business was sold to Sasfin where Gavin served as the CEO of Sasfin Wealth, the Stock Broking, Asset Management and Financial Planning businesses of Sasfin Bank. He chaired the board of management of the Sasfin Group's Retirement Fund.
In 2011 Gavin stepped down as CEO of Sasfin Wealth. Gavin and his wife Lucille acquired the Historic Pig and Whistle Inn the oldest licensed pub in South Africa. Gavin continues to consult to his clients with assets totalling about R500 million.
Gavin has served on the various Committees of the Life Offices Association (now ASISA) including the sub-committee, which drafted, with the government, the Long Term Insurance Act. Gavin currently serves as a board member of the Financial Intermediaries Association of Southern Africa (FIA) and chairs their Financial Planning sub-committee. He served as chief spokesman for the combined intermediary bodies in discussions with Treasury regarding contractual savings and regularly represents intermediaries in discussions with the regulator. Gavin has written extensively for publications and appeared as a guest on many Personal Finance chat shows.
