Lexicographers at Oxford University Press have come up with a nifty way to help increase global access and the understanding of language. Known as the Oxford Global Languages, the initiative focuses on widely spoken languages which are digitally under-represented.
IsiZulu and Northern Sotho became the first languages to take part in the global initiative when it was launched last month, with more languages to be added.
Oxford's lexicographers and language researchers have teamed up with language technologists to create language content built for the digital world. Once on the home screen, users insert the English word or phrase they would like to be translated, which provides an example.
Oxford University Press national publishing manager Megal Hall said: "The new sites offer language communities the opportunity to contribute their own knowledge to the core dictionary content already available. "There's almost no limit to the number of words the website can handle."
