Capetonians urged to show kindness

Last year's RAK drive marked the midwinter solstice and in preparation for the inevitable disasters caused by the Cape's winter storms and floods, the breakfast show urged listeners to donate tinned and non-perishable food. About 70 000 cans of food were collected and distributed to disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape.

Breakfast show co-host Mel Jones, who is the driving force behind the initiative, says they are hoping to do even more this year.

"Random Act of Kindness has been a daily initiative on the show for a number of years and it's all about giving without expecting something in return. Last year's RAK drive drew an amazing response and Nic (Marais) and I want to top that this year! We'll be broadcasting from various locations every day and want everyone to be there with bags filled with foodstuff," she continued.

The team will broadcast live from 6am to 9am from the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone on Tuesday the 17th, from the Rosmead Spar in Kenilworth on Wednesday the 18th, from the corner of Koeberg Road & Bosmansdam Road in Milnerton on Thursday the 19th and from the Rondebosch Common on Friday the 20th.

The tinned and non-perishable food can be dropped off at the locations on the days of the broadcast, anytime between 6am and 5pm.

Donations will be distributed through the City's Disaster Management portfolio to agencies affiliated with them for use in feeding the poor.
