German supermarket Aldi starts UK jobs expansion
German discount supermarket group Aldi on Tuesday said it would start recruiting 4,000 new staff under a large-scale expansion in Britain that puts further pressure on the nation's biggest retailer Tesco. "The retailer is looking to fill 4,000 roles across its stores and regional distribution centres following a surge in sales," Aldi said in a statement, confirming the number of new roles announced in January.
Aldi added that it became the UK's fifth-largest supermarket by market share earlier this year. It plans to have 1,000 UK stores by 2022, up from more than 700 currently. The rise of Aldi and German rival Lidl has forced established British supermarkets - including also WalMart-owned Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons - to cut prices despite rising food inflation.
