Police were called in to help control the crowd at the PEPcell Khayelitsha store.

From 4am on a dark and rainy morning, around a thousand people formed a 300m long queue to get into the new PEPcell store in Khayelitsha on Thursday, 31 July 2008, to be the first to benefit from the opening offers. Cellphones for as little as R99 plus a range of airtime discounts beckoned people and the store beat its own first day target before midday. The second store opened this morning in Parow Centre - when the queues started at 3am. The third opens in Nyanga on 15 August.
