SA's Paul Botes awarded CAP prize at PhotoBasel
The Mail & Guardian reports that the PhotoBasel International Art Fair in Switzerland awarded its photo editor Paul Botes with the Contemporary African Photography (CAP) Prize. Botes received the prize for Marikana - The Aftermath, in which he, along with freelance journalist Niren Tolsi, looks into the aftermath of the Marikana massacre.
He was selected by an international panel of 23 judges who chose from 25 shortlisted artists. The CAP Prize is an international award given to photographers who have created extraordinary work on the African continent or that which involves its diaspora; the other winners are Yassine Alaoui Ismaili, Anna Boyiazis, Tommaso Fiscaletti and Nic Grobler, and Phumzile Khanyile.
