The Independent Philanthropy Association of South Africa (IPASA) hosted its annual Philanthropy Symposium on 28 and 29 October this year under the theme, 'Social cohesion: Towards building hope and trust in South Africa'. The event took place at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study, focusing on the role that philanthropy can play in enhancing social cohesion in South African schools, universities and communities, and how philanthropy can address the various fault lines in society....

The winners of the 2019 Feathers Awards were recently announced in Johannesburg. The awards recognise South African personalities and institutions, activists, performing artists, sportspeople and media organisations that fly the LGBTIQ+ flag high.

Artist Dbongz Mahalathi is the winner of The Glass Recycling Company's (TGRC) Art for Glass Graffiti Competition. An awards ceremony recently held at The Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg named the best employee volunteering programmes in the country. U-Turn, Momentum Metropolitan, The Do More Foundation, Forgood, and Volkswagen South Africa are the companies that were honoured for its programmes.

The packaging of Orbit Gum's product range is now more sustainable and recyclable. The company's shift to more environmentally-friendly packaging falls in line Mars Incorporated's Sustainability in a Generation strategy. In the spirit of Mandela Day, Bizcommunity staff members volunteered to spend time with learners at Manenberg Primary School in Cape Town. The volunteers interacted and read to 70 learners between Grades R-1. The school is part of the Western Cape Education Department's literacy programme and is an ongoing project in underprivileged communities. In the wise words of the late Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."...

Save Our Schools (SOS) did its part for Mandela Day 2019 by launching three initiatives in the Bloekombos community of Kraaifontein. The initiatives were launched in collaboration with Grundfos, Munich Re, and Mountain Falls.

Adidas and Orlando Pirates Football Club gave back on Mandela Day by learning about the importance of adopting sustainable practices and by creating EcoBricks using non-recyclable plastic waste.

Famram Solutions founder and CEO Shamila Ramjawan recently handed over PrincessD Menstrual Cups to students at the Spearman Primary School in Sydenham, Durban. An educator from the school, Shamilla Singh, had made the sponsorship request, which was honoured by the United States of America Organisation of World Leaders, the Orchids and Famram Solutions as part of the "keeping girls in school" project.

The Spar Carols by Candlelight with Jacaranda FM took place at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on 11 December 2018. Jo Black, Karen Zoid, Kurt Darren, Charlize Berg, Nadine, Nianell, Swing City, Nick from Rubber Duc, and the Ndlovu Youth Choir performed at the event.

First Group's La Vita Health Spa at the Palace in Durban treated the three winners of the 2018 Hillcrest Aids Centre Gogo of the Year competition to a day of pampering. As the winners, the Gogos were given a brunch at the hotel's Pesto restaurant, which was followed by body treatments at the La Vita Spa, cosmetic gift hampers, and a travel set from Vaczone.

Global Citizen concluded its Mandela 100 campaign with a music festival at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. A number of local and international musicians, including Beyoncé and Jay Z, graced the stage as thousands of Global Citizens watched on.
