help! what are the copyright laws in sa?

Having just returned to SA from the UK, we are not clear on any recent changes to copyright laws governing marketing/advertising works. We're in dispute with a non-paying client. Can anyone clarify?

One of our clients is refusing to pay for work he has commissioned and we have delivered. Our original understanding is that copyright remains with the person who originated a work until s/he formally hands over copyright to the person who commissioned it. If the person who commissioned it doesn't pay, the person who originated the work is entitled to withold copyright and take action if the non-paying client breaches their copyright. Having been out of SA for some time, we're not sure if this is still the case. Of course, we're researching suitable lawyers. But if anyone out there has any recent experience in this area, we'd be very grateful for their clarification. Alternatively, does anyone know of a reliable source of affordable legal advice for marketing/PR/advertising businesses?
