In 2009 the UN General Assembly declared Madiba's birthday, 18 July, as international Mandela Day, a call to action for global citizens to celebrate his great life and legacy with actions that address social injustices. Thank you to those making a difference in your communities and in the world.

Kolisi Foundation

Great Commission United (GCU)
  • GCU is based in Heideveld on the Cape Flats. We aim to provide the youth in the community with the opportunity to dream of a better future and assist to provide the education tools and life skills that will make those dreams a reality. We offer early childhood development (Including building a new creche), education support, physical education, sport, mentors and role models to young people who often don't have that in their own homes. GCU also feeds the hungry in Cape Town through its Mother Soup project. Stipend remuneration is provided to unemployed youth in the community together with skills training.

  • SA Harvest is creating a food rescue and distribution platform that will ultimately enable us to realise our mission to ensure that every South African is able to access adequate nutritious food on a daily basis. Philisa Abafazi Bethu
  • Philisaa Abafazi Bethu is a non-profit organisation countering gender-based violence in Lavender Hill. During the lockdown, funds and resources have been channeled into school feeding schemes.

Where Rainbows Meet
  • Where Rainbows Meet was registered as a non-profit organisation in 2008. Since its inception, in recognition of the multiple disadvantages and challenges facing the Vrygrond community, Rainbows has expanded and diversified its work. Currently donations will be going to the feeding outreach and towards the education of women, men and children.

  • 9Miles Project is a youth and community development programme which uses surfing as a catalyst to engage at-risk and vulnerable youth in Cape Town, Elands Bay and St. Francis Bay. They are helping support communities during the Covid-19 crisis through a feeding scheme.

Neighbour to Neighbour Support Program
  • Afrika Tikkun is mobilising a community-level response to Covid-19 in the townships where it works. It is scaling up supplies of food and essentials to vulnerable families in the Gauteng townships of Alexandra, Diepsloot, Braamfontein, and Orange Farm, as well as Mfuleni in the Western Cape.

eMedia Covid-19 Relief Fund
  • The eMedia Covid-19 Relief Fund is a partnership with the HCI Foundation to help eradicate hunger for thousands of vulnerable communities in South Africa, by providing them with much-needed food relief during the current global Covid-19 pandemic and national lockdown.

  • Wonderbag, in partnership with Recipe4Resilience, is distributing kits that will help feed families, permanently improve their living conditions, and help slow the transmission of Covid-19, to vulnerable families in Africa.

COACH
  • Coalition of Anglican Children's Homes comprises St George's and St Nicolas Home. COACH provides a safe and loving environment to the children and youth. During lockdown, funds have been prioritised to ensure protective measures against the virus.

  • The Youth Social Care NPO is looking for donations for their Covid-19 food relief feeding scheme for the homeless, victims of gender-based violence, child-headed homes, the unemployedand persons with health issues (HIV/AIDS,and TB).

  • Kids Haven aims to reach children in need, especially those without parental care, to provide shelter, protection, education, training and therapy. During COVID-19 we are serving the impoverished families in our community through donations of food parcels and food vouchers.

  • JAM SA is in the process of rolling out multiple initiatives to assist those living in vulnerable communities across South Africa. This includes the distribution of essential food supplies and hygiene products, along with awareness and practical training on sanitation and hand-washing practices to curb the spread of the Corona Virus.

Place of Mercy and Hope
  • Marist Mercy Care's "Place of Mercy and Hope" (PBO and NPO) located in a rural town in Addo, Eastern Cape, South Africa took the initiative to provide food parcels and essentials to the surrounding formal and informal settlements.

Call Care
  • Call Care provides COVID-19 Essential Care parcels, in partnership with Village Power Traders. Each family is provided with fresh food produce, PPE, educational materials, hygiene and non-perishables products.

Legal Resources Centre
  • The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) is committed to a fully democratic society based on the based on the principles of substantive equality. It seeks to ensure that the principles, rights and responsibilities enshrined in our Constitution are respected, promoted, protected and fulfilled. Since 1979, the LRC has functioned as an independent, public interest law clinic which process free legal services to poor, vulnerable and marginalised individuals and communities in South Africa.

H.M.P.D.C
  • Hope Multi-Purpose Drop-in Center has been caring for 150 orphans and vulnerable children and youth in Botshabelo during the Covid-19 Lockdown, the NPO is requesting food, sanitary items, clothes and funds.

The Teddy Bear Foundation
  • During Covid 19 The Teddy Bear Foundation continues to support abused children and giving out food parcels to those who are in need.

Thanda
  • Thanda provides holistic support for children and families living in rural uMtwalume, KZN through programmes centered around early learning, education, and organic farming. Currently, the organisation is distributing food parcels as well as educational resources and activity packs to support children's learning at home. Thanda's staff is also providing guidance for guardians (via SMS and socially-distanced home visits) to help them facilitate their children's educational and social-emotional development during this time.

  • 1000 Women Trust supports 45 soup kitchens and vent buddy support to survivors of gender-based violence. The 1000 Women Trust has designed special communications strategies for women in isolation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

RivLife International Community Centre
  • RivLife International Community Centre is a NPO and NGO registered with the Department of Social Development, in Cinderella Park, Pietermaritzburg. While we offer social services, food aid and other interventions, we are also partners of the Isibindi Community-based Care programme. At present, our main focus is assessing and responding to the needs of South African households who have been badly affected by the social and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ELRU
  • ELRU (Early Learning Resource Unit) supports pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and primary caregivers of vulnerable children ages 0-6 through quality early childhood development (ECD) programmes and training. Their COVID-19 Food Emergency Fund provides food and critical nutrition support to young ELRU beneficiaries and their families living in vulnerable communities of the Western Cape.

The Simphiwe Bird Foundation
  • The Simphiwe Bird Foundation is doing everything in their power to mitigate the effects of this pandemic in the Elsies River area by providing two cooked meals a day to over 250 children from under priviledged families in the area.The foundation is in need of funds to sustain the food program and also provide warm winter clothing and blankets, school essentials, sanitary essentials as well as new and/or used sports equipment.
