SA, Mozambique to review partnership

The visit is within the context of South Africa's commitment to strengthen relations with countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), International Relation's spokesperson Saul Molobi said.

"During the discussions, the presidents will delve much on how cooperation will be further strengthened, especially in the areas of agriculture, health, tourism, trade and investment, water and environment, energy," he said.

A Heads of State Economic Bilateral forum between South Africa and Mozambique was created in 1997 and presents the two with the opportunity to ascertain progress in the implementation of milestone regional projects that they have undertaken.

Zuma will be supported by International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana Mashabane, nine other cabinet ministers and senior government officials from various departments.

South Africa has emerged as the main trading partner for Mozambique and its main source of foreign direct investment. Trade between the two countries involves traditional exports to South Africa: mostly nickel ores, unwrought nickel and cotton, among others.

South African exports, in turn, consist of manufactured goods, petroleum, motor vehicles and a variety of consumer goods to meet the fast growing demands of an increasing urban population, and a booming manufacturing sector.

Other South African major investments in Mozambique include Sasol, Hollard, Standard Bank, ABSA, First National Bank, Arcelor-Mittal, Capital Star Steel, Vodacom, Grindrod, WBHO, Nestle SA, Barloworld, Southern Sun (Holiday Inn) and SAB.
